Telcosystems… measuring the digital clouds…
As I blogged last year, about 25fps International Festival of Experimental Film and Video being one of my dearest festivals, it was naturally to cover it up but in more detailed version this time.

Excerpt from poster, 25fps (2008)
This year 25fps really had several gems that I couldn’t miss, thus I decided to concentrate more on the new programme additions than on the official competition, which I used to do in previous years.
The new category was the Expanded Cinema selection, designed in order to give us a new perspective by breaking up the usual perception about audio-visual intelligence being projected on the screen only. I guess, the main idea was to see ‘how stuff workz’ when you use generative processed arts in the performative context.

Telcosystems (c)
The projects presented within the category were Telcosystems, Lafoxe and Incite/. Each of them totally different while approaching and treating the visual/sound material, therefore the first two above mentioned, moved my senses into 3D experience although they didn’t use a sort of a classic stereoscopic technology.
Telcosystems was founded in 2001 by Gideon Kiers, David Kiers and Lucas van der Velden members of 0010, minuszero, D:U:M:B and DLF. Their intention was to create a project which explores digital outputs while being plugged-in into audiovisual perspective. The concept is based on programmed algorithms which leads to a specific digital manipulation and treatment of the visual (read graphic) aspects combined with the sound-surround narration.

This new media artists have been so far regularly presented in the programme of Ars Electronica (Linz), Sonar (Barcelona), .MOV festival (Tokyo), EMAF (Osnabrück), Shortfilm Festival Oberhausen, Airwaves (Reykjavík), Abstraction Now (Vienna), etc.

Mortals Electric by Telcosystems is totally based on digital technology exploring subtle interrelations of sound being into cohesion with visual interaction. Since they use multilayered sound compositions, it was a kind of natural that the plaster started to fall from the ceiling of the theatre. The 360 degrees of space / sound focus leaves no place for any thoughts but only to be drawn into the artwork.
It was a nice feeling to get up from the chair after performance covered with white crumbs on my black clothes wondering if …
…is for mathematicians, engineers or physicist only…

Telcosystems (c)
The strongest element was the sound, whilst the imaginarium created by Telcosystems has been formed through visual glossary and eclectic grammar characteristic for new media art and particularly digital arts.
The combination of black and white tones in digital-cinematic experiences always makes a certain effect that you can’t resist if you are hooked up to digital artz in general.

From Semaphore, Telcosystems (c)
Mathematical algorithms transmitted into sounds forming the abstraction of digital clouds strongly oscillates the idea of unstoppable and blasting sound.
It was the idea of nature, sure. Because, the performance was short (approximately about 30 min), but proportional to duration in the frequency and intensity showing us how the theory of sound is not something interesting only to scientists and geeks but the art form itself.

The science of sound…
p.s. the formula above is the sound pressure level calculation…
p.s.1. Telcosystem won the Grand Prix for their film Loudthings presented at 25fps.
p.s.2. Don’t you ever miss Telcosystems.
p.s.3. I’ve just heard news that tonight was snowing on Mars… So, I wish to all Martians currently living on Earth: Bon Iver!
