Body cinema: Sugar & Snails

When I launched the Pocket cinema section on Personal Cyber Botanica, I had in mind to start first with dance films related section, but good documentary films just came into my life… and I couldn’t control it…

So, I owe you a section dedicated to dance and body related films, and here it is: Body cinema section… welcome to the first screening… this is the only section on my blog where pop-corns are not welcomed (sorry!)…

Sugar and Snails is a dance short film directed by Canadian filmmaker Kathi Prosser and choreographed by William Yong. The film was presented at many international dance film festivals from 2005 to present, and also resulted in synonymous dance piece performed by Yong’s dance company Zata Omm Dance Projects. Sugar and Snails film features Kristy Kennedy and William Yong.

When thinking about this film, don’t forget that William Yong worked too with Wayne McGregor on Labrax… it reminded me a lot on McGregor’s powerful choreography.  Rhythm… Tempo of choreography… Impulses… Don’t you think?

Intense… I love the rhythm and tempo. Excellent dancers, fine
movement, dialog. I am just not so sure about editing and direction
of the film, sometimes it does not give the honor to what is going
on between the dancers, the flow is frequently cut, neglected…
    Thanks for sharing it.

hey! tnx for your comment… they are great dancers, indeed… i
liked the filming technique because it’s not typical, you know…
when you have such performers, you can play as you wish…

thank you. I also enjoyed the editing as screen dance or dance
video intentionally plays with not just the dancers bodies but with
the camera and editing techniques as well, it is a collaboration
between the two that makes this art form so beautiful.
