Body cinema: Zwischen/Between by Diegonante

Diegontante is an ‘undercover name’ of  young videographer and media artist Diego Agullo from Spain. His primarily interest is video dance, a form or ‘movement-based Video work that combines dance with electronically recorded images (video) and is conceived and choreographed for viewing; digitally produced computer images and sound produced using video and/or micro-computers. ‘

‘This avant-garde approach to dance combines dance, film-making and televisual practices. Other terms that are commonly used to describe this kind of work are ‘dance film’, ‘dance on screen’, ‘cine dance’, ‘screen dance’ etc.’ (Glare Media Art Resources definition)

Diego Agullo Moreno graduated philosophy in Madrid, and holds an PHD in Music aesthetics and Digital art. At the moment he lives somewhere between Berlin and Amsterdam, developing new projects at the intersections of video, dance and music. He’s the organizer of CUE Berlin, an open space for spontaneous expression and interdisciplinary improvisation.

I’ve picked you up his work Zwischen/Between (2006), which is a combination of his two previous works: Zwischen, a video with Todd Ford recorded in Warschauerbrücke, Berlin; and Between, a video taken with Osamu Uehara at Brooklyn bridge in NYC.

Synopsis:
Zwischen, which translates as between, is a lyrical commentary on the ins and outs of life as a foreigner in a city. At times one feels perfectly accepted with this adopted home. At other times it is like swimming upstream backwards. In this case, an outsider has to be strong. One is bombarded with emotions, some new and others reminiscent of battles already fought. Zwischen attempts to convey visually and musically some of these feelings. The video begins and ends on a Bridge, which metaphorically represents the gap between individuals, microcosms and opposing masses. It is a very real space to be overcome in order to reach each other.
