Body cinema: Origami Dance

Origami is a traditional Asian art of paper folding. The name Origami is inherited from the Japanese culture, and the craft itself is usually perceived of Japanese origins. But historians think that origami was invented between 1st and 2nd Century AC in China, then spread to Japan sometime during the sixth Century.

However, the skill itself has been kept in its traditional form, but also have many varieties in nowadays papercraft, of which Cubeecraft got a cult status in the internet community… How to combine visual and constructional aspects of origami with dance, you can check in a film I picked up today.

‘Origami Dance’ by visual and mixed media artist Sasha Meret is based on the shapes created by the Taiwanese artist-performer Susu Shuling Shih. Meret presents his short film as ‘A hypnotic dance reminiscent of the ancient art of paper folding – Origami’.
