Interview with Maja Drobac: Dancing between East and West

Dancer and choreographer Maja Drobac could be with certainty described as multi-talented artist… she expresses herself, parallel with dance, in the fields of photography and writing, too…

Cool boyz from the past… male dancers

I just realized that I never introduced male dancers in the ‘vintage category’… Therefore, I made a small selection of male dancers who were active between approximately 1900 to 1925. Back then, they made decadent ladies in the audience pretty upset and flushed in their faces…

Cool people from past: Tashamira

I wanted to post this on my blog for a long time… Tashamira was a Croatian dancer and choreographer whose real name was Vera Milcinovic. When I first time saw her photos from 1930’s at the exhibition ‘Avant Garde Tendencies in Croatian Art’ few years ago, I was completely thrilled…

First, her name sounds even today very hype and cool… But Tashamira’s ‘image’ was crucial, just take a look at her costume and hair cut… She was also one of those faces that were far ahead of their time…

Body cinema: Denis Darzacq Photographer

It’s time to start with presentations of dance photography and photographers on my blog… It’s been a long time since I blogged on Christopher Doyle, photographer inspired by dance in Asia… This time, I have picked up short documentary ‘Several inches above the asphalt’ on great French photographer Denis Darzacq to see his process of working…

The name of photographer Denis Darzacq became for gallerists and curators really a must have name, cause his photos got a lot of fairly deserved attention… Dancers in shops or urban streets flying around in ordinary clothes with unusual positions of their body parts…

Old school photography: Duro Janekovic

Some of you maybe remember when I blogged about  photographer Toso Dabac last year. Yeah, the one we call ‘our Henri Cartier Bresson’. It’s interesting how ’small nations’ always need to refer to ‘bigger nations‘…

Anyway, several weeks ago the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb opened an exhibition with photographs by Duro Janekovic (1912-1989). He was Dabac’s fellow, but his work hasn’t been so far presented… As photojournalist Janekovic created amazing street photographs; and as athlete he had the great sense for dance and sport photography.
