Chris Sugrue is an interaction designer, artist, programer and lecturer. She took part in the team which created one of the most intriguing and awarded wearable technology project in 2010 – The EyeWriter.

It’s a low-cost eye controlled drawing tool for ALS patients (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a degenerative neuromuscular disorder that causes paralysis, initially created for cult LA graffiti artist and activist  Tempt1.

Chris spent this spring / summer as artist-in-residence in Ljudmila (Ljubljana, Slovenia), presenting her work also in Kibla (Maribor,) and netclub MaMa in Zagreb (Croatia). Her visit to Zagreb was organized by Center for Synergy of Digital and Visual Arts and Upgrade Zagreb! (both founded by Maja Kalogera).

Oh, I’m back to blogging, my dear friendz! Just had some cluttered weekz, and absolutely great echo after visiting Belgrade’s Napravi Me! / Make Me Festival in the middle of June. The input I’ve got there was so strong, so I needed the other way out to articulate thingz.

Short documentary Karakuri by Matthew Allard had been already widespread all around the web. It’s a movie I wanted to publish at the beginning of June, but then I had mini break…  So, it’s never too late for a good dox here! Karakuri is a traditional Japanese puppet craft, actually an ancient variant of robotics.

In April I went to Ljubljana for a one-day workshop ‘Du du kuglica sajica mavrica‘ led by  Boštjan Leskovšek, Bengt Sjölén, and Marc Dusseiler from Hackteria.org. It was a continuation of 10 days NanoŠmano series of workshops and events (initiated by  Stefan Doepner/f18institut and Marc Dusseiller/hackteria) dedicated to DIYbio and nanotechnology, or as more precisely Stefan Doepner pointed out: ‘The project started new explorations into the world of matter on the nanoscale by investigating its physical and aesthetic potentials. As an collaborative and open research based workshop by artists, hackers and scientists, we want to elicit methods to enable the creative use of nano materials in critical and playful artistic process.’

The authors of the concept are: STEFAN DOEPNER – MARC DUSSEILLER – BOSTJAN LESKOVSEK – BENGT SJOELEN – ERIK REIMHULT

You know, I’m very often on workshops: DIY, software or hardware based stuff, interactivity, wearables; but after Hackteria’s workshop I really had a feeling that I pushed my understanding on DIY cultures strongly, strongly forward. Priceless…
